Abstract Outbreak of respiratory aspergillosis was documented in 15-week-old desi chicken in which, Aspergillus fumigatus was demonstrated in the crushed lung nodules by lactophenol cotton blue staining technique and also recovered from the lung and air-sac tissue suspensions on Sabouraud dextrose agar at 37° C. The characteristic hyphae of Aspergillus fumigatus were demonstrated in the granulomatous nodules of lungs in histological sections stained by periodic acid Schiff and Grocott-Gomari's (GG) Silver methanamine methods. Grossly, granulomatous nodules of 0.3 - 0.5 mm in diameter in the lungs and thoracic air-sac, thickening of air-sacs, yellowish caseous plaques occluding the trachea surrounded by hyperaemic mucosa, and yellow-tinged ascites were observed. Histologically, multifocal necrotic areas, inflammatory cellular infiltrations, presence of fungal hyphae, giant cells and peripheral fibrous tissue proliferation in lungs, focal necrosis of mucosa, mononuclear cellular infiltrations and sub-mucosal fibrosis in trachea and necrotic areas, sub-serosal fibrosis, and histiocytic infiltrations in air sac were observed. The reasons for ascites and heavy mortality in Indian native chicken were analysed. Top Keywords Desi chicken, Pathology, Respiratory aspergillosis. Top |
