Online published on 31 January, 2014. Abstract Phytoplankton in Mahanadi of Odisha investigated seasonally from January 2008 to December 2009 at three stations Up stream S1, middle stream S2 & down stream S3. Result revealed that diversity of species Chlorophyceae 53.45% whrease Cyanophyceae 20.78% and Bacillariophyceae 25.77% were composed. The physicochemical parameters such as water temperature, pH, total nitrogen, total alkalinity, chloride and phosphate were significantly related to phytoplankton abundance, but total abundance and community structure of phytoplankton were not influenced by environmental factors.
