Abstract There is a dire need for effective tools to bridge the gap and to bring every section of the society into the banking stream. Information and communication technology can act as a effective tool to develop a platform which helps in enhancing financial inclusion, even in remote areas. Technology interventions in the banking sector will also help to reduce cost and increase customer reachability and also facilitates better management of risk. However, the Indian banking sector has observed an incredible development in the IT in last few years. Banking operations have been made easier and customer friendly due to technological enhancements. The banks are also providing with lots of services which are the mixture of electronics and information technology, like, Computerization and networking, Core banking, Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), Plastic money i.e. credit card, debit card and smart cards, Phone banking, Mobile banking, e-banking or net-banking, EFT, NEFT, RTGS etc. Reserve Bank of India has also adopted IT in endorsing the payment system's functionality and modernization on an ongoing basis to improve the efficiency of banking sector. This paper is an attempt to study the role of ICT in banking. This paper also analyses the awareness, use and possession of ICT among the below poverty line households of Mangalore city and finds that there is a immediate need of enhancing awareness of ICT in banking.
