Abstract The present paper is an attempt of the researcher to analyze the extent of common lands is available in the Sothern Zone of Tamil Nadu during the last 20 years. The study finds that, of the eight districts in the Sothern Zone, the availability of CPLRs was observed that an increase in six districts. But in two districts, namely Ramanathapuram and Karur district, it evidenced that a decline in CPLRs from 19.05 per cent in 1998–99 to 13.17 per cent in 2014–15 and 50.39 per cent to 46.89 per cent respectively between 1998–99 to 2014–15. It further estimated that in Ramanathapuram district, the per capita of CPLRs was estimated at 0.05 hectares in 2001 and it has declined to 0.04 hectares in 2011. The remaining district data have shown an increasing trend of the same in the last two census periods.
