Particular emphasis is placed on the socio-economic, cultural and structural determinants that engender (a) marginalisation of these individuals. With comprehensive qualitative fieldwork (which includes in-depth interviews and data gathered through observation), the article explores themes such as economic insecurity, health vulnerability, social alienation and coping strategies. The findings—viewed through a sociological lens of urban marginality—illuminate complex intersections that prevail between individual agency and structural forces perpetuating homelessness's enduring nature. We discuss recommendations for policy interventions and community-based support systems (because such measures are essential) to provide insights that can inform inclusive urban planning and social policy. However, the complexity of these issues cannot be ignored, although there exists a semblance of hope for amelioration through concerted efforts.
