However, the nutritional landscape within these facilities is often overlooked despite its profound impact on inmates' health and well-being. This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of dietary patterns offered in correctional facilities worldwide. We delve into the various factors influencing the nutritional quality of meals, including budget constraints, food procurement policies, and cultural considerations. Additionally, we examine the prevalence of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases among inmates and their relationship with dietary choices behind bars. Through this review, we highlight the necessity of prioritizing nutrition within correctional facilities as a means to not only improve the health outcomes of inmates but also to promote successful reintegration into society post-release. Finally, we identify fields for future investigation and policy development to ensure equitable access to nutritious meals for all individuals within the criminal justice system.
