Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the relationship between the big five personality factors and professional burnout among the medical staff in hospitals of District 4 in Tehran. The sampling is stratified and the samples are selected from four hospitals in this district based on the the proportion of medical staff numbers in each hospital. Using Morgan Table, the required sample size is obtained equal to 185. NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) are applied for data collection. The results indicate that there is a significant relationship between 5 major factors of personality and professional burnout at the confidence level of 95%. Furthermore, according to the values of path coefficients, among the variables of big five personality factors, the conscientiousness (inversely), openness, agreeableness (inversely), and extroversion (inversely) have the greatest effect on the professional burnout, respectively.
