Online published on 6 September, 2014. Abstract The main aim of this study was to find out the role played by employee benefits in motivating employees in non-governmental organizations based in Gaborone, Botswana as well as how these organizations understand these concepts. The study also focused on finding out which benefits were offered in these organizations and whether there were other motivating factors involved in working in a non-governmental organization than employee benefits. The study was conducted in Gaborone as it is the capital city and the sample for this study was selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Employees from chosen non-governmental organizations were involved in the study regardless of the positions they held within their respective organizations. The research is both a qualitative and a quantitative study and the data was collected using interviews and questionnaires. Microsoft Word and Excel were used to analyze the data and pie charts, data tables and bar graphs were used to present the data. Employees in non-governmental organizations know what employee benefits are and some of the benefits offered in these organizations include, maternity and sick leaves, funeral plans, in-service trainings, and medical aid schemes. There are other motivating factors involved in working in non-governmental organizations that motivate employees more than employee benefits and that is the main service they provide to the community at large.
