University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana Online published on 6 September, 2014. Abstract The main aim of this study was to find out the role played by employee benefits in motivating employees in non-governmental organizations based in Gaborone Botswana, as well as how these organizations understand the concepts of motivation and employee benefits. The study also focused on finding out which benefits were offered in these organizations and whether there were other motivating factors involved in working for a non-governmental organization than employee benefits. The study was conducted in Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana and the sample for this study was selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Employees from chosen non-governmental organizations were selected as respondents of the study, regardless of the positions they held within their respective organizations. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods, and the data was collected using interviews and questionnaires. Microsoft Word and Excel were used to analyse the data, and pie charts, data tables and bar graphs were used to present the data. Employees in non-governmental organizations knew what employee benefits were, and could relate to some of the benefits offered in these organizations including maternity, sick leaves, funeral plans, in-service trainings, and medical aid schemes. There are other motivating factors involved in non-governmental organizations that motivate employees more than employee benefits, this was identified as services provided to the community at large by these organisations.
