Assessment on the awareness on Sexually Transmitted Infections in Dodoma Region: A Case of Dodoma Municipality, Bahi and Chamwino Districts

Abstract

The study was conducted in Dodoma region. Involved 590 respondents of which 48 formed a FGD and 12 were key informants. Snowball method was used in sample selection. Questionnaires, checklist, interview and focus group discussion were used in data collection. Data were processed by SPSS, Logistic regression was used for data analysis. Symptoms of STIs include Abnormal Genital discharge, Genital ulcer, still birth and HIV/AIDS. Common diseases were reported to include Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chancroid and AIDS. 83.6% are aware that a health looking person is not free from STIs. 93.4% of respondents reported “STIs to be the problem in Dodoma region. Bivariate analysis on abnormal genital discharge shows that, district, duration of stay and religion (p=0.012, 0.005 and 0.006) were statistically significant. Inguinal bubble, duration of stay (p=0.000), were highly statistically significant. Duration of stay (p=0.007) and sex (p=0.003) was statistically significant. Secondary education had negative relationship with abnormal genital discharge and statistically significant at p=0.005. Duration of stay “11–20 and 21–30 years” had positive relationship, were more than one times likely to report Abnormal genital discharge and Inguinal bubble. Knowledge on prevalence of sexually transmission is very high. People should check their health regularly and abide to safe sex to avoid new STIs infection.
