In the case of dental/mouth injuries blood mixing with saliva increases the risk of blood-borne infection. Dental trauma refers injury to the teeth and/or periodontium (gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone), and nearby soft tissues such as the lips, tongue, etc. Athletes wear a protective device (i.e. mouth guard) for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. It is most often used in contact sports like Boxing, Wrestling, and Basketball etc. There are numerous types of mouth guards available in market or sports store but in India use of mouth guard is little less in comparison to other developed sports playing nation. We surveyed 100 athletes from different sports in Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior concerning their opinions and use of mouth guards. More than half of the athletes were aware of the existence of mouth guard mostly & they are informed by the teammates & advertisement but they don't use mouth guard in daily sports practice because they find it of no use or missing regular adaptive use of mouth guard.
