Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of promising semideep and deepwater rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes under intermediate lowland situation during wet season of 2000 (on-station) and 2001 (on-farm) at Regional Rainfed Lowland Rice Research Station, Gerua. On-station results revealed that genotype CR 780–1937 yielded highest (5.12 t/ha) followed by CR 662–2211 (5.10 t/ha), CR 661–236 (5.02 t/ha) and Bhudev (4.77 t/ha). Similar results were obtained from on-farm trial except that the yields were low (3.85 to 3.59 t/ha) due to high weed pressure and intermittent moisture stress during the initial 6 weeks after germination. Interestingly, these semideep water rice genotypes flowered between 11 and 17 October and had moderately high panicle number (323 to 380/m2 in on-station and 293–317/m2 in on-farm trial), high grains per panicle (75.1–109.8) and moderately high spikelet fertility (69–76%). False smut disease appeared in wet season of 2000 only and it's incidence varied from moderate to high (17 to 35%) for these high yielding genotypes. Highest false smut incidence (up to 49%) was noted for genotypes flowering in September. Thus, semideep water genotypes flowering in mid-October with enough panicle and grain number were high yielder under intermediate lowland situation in spite of moderate to high incidence of false smut disease.
