The rice white tip nematode in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India Sivakumar C.V. Agricultural Research Station, Thirupathisaram-629 901, India. Abstract Field observations conducted on the rice white tip nematode at Thirupathisaram, Kanyakumari district, suggested that the disease may appear even when nematode-free seeds are used and also that the nematode lives in rice stubbles left in the field after harvest and help in the carry over of inoculum from season to season. Further, fungi like Fusarium sp. or Curvularia sp. found in straw, are probable alternate hosts for the nematode in the field. The nematode probably undergoes a diapause, after the harvest of the second crop in February-March, to tide over the adverse weather conditions, and becomes active again in May. Additionally, it appeared that rainfall and a relative humidity of over 80 per cent, after flower initiation phase of the crop, are necessary for migration of the nematode to the panicle.
