Abstract The aim of this study is to provide awareness about the common causes of deaths in Mauritius during last 3 years 1998–2000. Cases are divided into natural and unnatural deaths. Among the deaths due to natural causes, heart disease (myocardial insufficiency) and cerebro-vascular disease contributes about half of the cases being the leading cause of death, followed by deaths due to neoplasms and respiratory diseases. Among unnatural deaths (i.e. deaths due to violent causes), road traffic accident is the main cause of death, followed by suicide. These data are analyzed and compared with other similar studies. The mortality can be reduced by assessing deaths as preventable and non-preventable, and by giving proper intervention and prevention. Top Keywords Unnatural, Deaths, Mortality, Prevention. Top |
