Studies on the examination of age of the blood stain by spectrophotometric method Sharma Meenakshi1, Garg Rakesh Kumar1, Kaur Navjot2 1Department of Forensic Science, Punjabi University, Patiala. 2Department of Forensic Science, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi. Summary The present investigation has been conducted on blood stains kept under two different conditions (internal and external) for a varied length of time i. e. up to four weeks period. The age of dried blood stain was assessed by UV - visible spectrophotometric analysis technique using normal saline as the extractant. Stains kept in laboratory conditions (internal) gave more absorbance as compared to the externally placed stains. Two clear and distinct peaks of absorbance at 575nm and 540nm were recorded. The absorbance value decreased with progressive increase in age of the blood stains kept under both the conditions. From this study it is evident that the factors (internal and external) play an important part in the estimation of the age of dried blood.
