Abstract

Races can be determined to some extent by cephalic index. In the present study authors have estimated cephalic index of students of Kerala.313 students belonging to age group of 18 to 25 were measured for maximum head length and head breadth and cephalic index was worked out. Out of the 313 students 208 were females and 105 were males. The mean cephalic index for the study population was 79.48. The mean cephalic index for male was 78.79 and for female it was 79.84, which showed a statistically significant difference. The result of the present study showed that dominant type of skull in males is mesocephalic(51.43%) and in female also it is mesocephalic(42.31%). The data observed were correlated with data of cephalic indices of various regions of India. Thisdata of Kerala population can also be used for comparisoninfuture studies.
