Is alcohol really good for cardiac health? Pillay VV, MD, DCL, Professor & H.O.D. Dept. of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Abstract Preparation and consumption of alcoholic beverages dates back to ancient times. The popularity of alcohol stems from its perceived benefits as a social lubricant, and for relaxation, recreation, and sensory pleasure. Long term excessive consumption however is known to cause serious health problems. But over the past two decades, a rapidly expanding body of scientific research seems to support the theory that moderate alcohol consumption can actually prevent cardio vascular disease. This paper examines the various mechanisms propounded along with critical appraisal of such claims in order to really decide as to whether moderate alcohol consumption is good for one's cardiac health. The balance of evidence indicates that while there may be scientific justification in such an assertion, this will have to be weighed against alcohol's known potential for abuse and consequent ill effects not only on the cardiovascular system but on other systems as well.
