Medical aspects of rape victim: Indian perspective Verma SK, MD, Agarwal BBL, MD Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, UCMS, Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, Delhi-110095. Abstract The world ‘Rape’ means taking any thing by force. But commonly it refers to the crime of sexual assault on women. For a victim of rape, the problems are many fold ranging from the her health to the social stigma in the society. Medical problems are among the first to crop up after this henious crime A doctor is usually the first ray of hope for these poor victims on whom they have faith to relieve them from the agony and suffering of the tragedy. However, there are serious gaps in the present system of examination and treatment of these victims in our country, which not only has harmful effects on the management of the victims but are also beneficial to the culprits of the crime. The probable solution lies in creation of “Rape Crisis (Treatment) Centre” for comprehensive management of these victims along with co-ordinated approach of the investigating agencies. To discuss the problems associated with regard to the examination and treatment of the rape victims and the role of medical men in this situation is the aim of the authors in this paper.
