Abstract

Monkey pox is an Orthopox virus similar to variola and vaccinia viruses. The world experienced a new epidemic of Mpox in 2022, a disease which was mainly confined to African subcontinent spread to many unknown territories and caused concern to the world. Many feel that the emergence of human mpox is intertwined with the eradication of smallpox and the cessation of smallpox vaccine. Further this epidemic brought to light that unnatural sexual behaviour can pose risk for diseases which are classically not sexually transmitted diseases. With the efforts of the WHO and global community the outbreak was controlled though cases are still being reported from Americas, the European Region and to some extent from the South-East Asia Region and the African Region. A global vigil and surveillance for Mpox is still ongoing.
