Pollen-grain studies in Vitis sps. and their significance Patil S.G. Division of Plant Sciences, Agharkar Research Institute, Agharkar Road, Pune 411 004 Summary Variation in pollen-grain characters like pollen size, L/D ratio, wall thickness, protoplasmic area and viability in 9 species of genus Vitis revealed maximum variation in all the characters. The pollen size was maximum in V. champini and minimum in V. parviflora. Wall thickness was maximum in V. vinifera and minimum in V. candicans. Maximum protoplasmic area and pollen viability were found in V. champini and V. vinifera respectively. Variations in pollen-grains were conspicuous particularly in V. Ianata. Data also supported the identification of species and help the taxonomic treatment of genus Vitis in family Vitaceae based on such pollen characters. Top | | | |
