Summary

On the basis of the data bank of 1,800 leaf nutrient composition and yield observations from 6 main, apple-growing locations in Himachal Pradesh, 36 nutrient expressions were selected as DRIS norms for apple. The data were divided into high and low-yielding subpopulations using a cut off yield level of 25 tonnes/ha and above. The norms and indices were derived by standard DRIS techniques. The validity of norms involving N, P and K nutrients only, viz. P/N, N/K and P/K with norm values of 0.086, 1.3 and 0.11 respectively were used using data obtained from a factorial fertilizer experiment in which 12 NPK combination were applied and significant response to leaf N, P and K concentrations and yield was obtained. In both the years, the DRIS approach was able to make correct diagnosis by revealing relative nutrient insufficiencies correctly even where critical value approach failed to make any diagnosis. Thus, the DRIS approach revealed nutrient deficiencies in the range normally considered to be sufficient. Increased precision is found in the evaluation of nutrient balance in the DRIS approach which is ingnored in case of critical value approach.
