Summary

Dry seeds of three wheat varieties Ridley, N.P. 770 and N.P. 829 were exposed to different dosages of ionizing radiations, which included X-rays, Gamma rays, Fast-neutrons and beta-particles. M2 material, when screened for frequency and distribution of induced mutations showed predominant occurrence of grass-clumps in Ridley and that too mostly confined to X-ray treatments. The significant increase in the manifestation of grass-clumps at Bhowali (hilly track) was quite interesting. These observations demonstrated the different varietal response and the role of genotype-environmental interaction in the expressivity of these drastic mutants. Reduced pollen fertility and numerous chromosomal abnormalities observed in different plants, could explain the poor fertility and low survival rate of these mutants. The induced grass-clumps probably owe their origin to gross chromosomal changes and their expressivity is greatly influenced by low temperature and extended period of growth.
