Abstract

The thermostable alkaline protease was produced from Bacillus sp.JB-99 under Solid State Fermentation and used as an additive in leather processing and laundry detergent formulation. In dehairing of hides and skins; paint, spray and dip methods are followed. About 0.4% (w/v) of dry bacterial bran (80μg/ml protein) in 25mM Glycine NaOH buffer (pH 10.5) shown total dehairation by Spray method within 12h of incubation, followed by paint and dips methods. The histological observations proved the digestion of basal cells of hair bulb by enzyme and disruption of fat glands. The physical evaluation report of unhaired pelts showed the stable tensile strength with quality retention. The washing tests on stained cloths, using alkaline protease as an additive gave positive results.
