Noor Veterinary Research Institute, Department of Veterinary Services, 59 Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, 31400, Ipoh Perak Abstract A study on prevalence of surra(Trypanosoma evansi), anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophila) and piroplasmosis (Babesia equi and Babesia caballi) was carried out on local horses in Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 887 blood and 238 serum samples of equines received from 12 states of Malaysia were examined using thin smear, microhaematocrit centrifugation and serological techniques (cELISA and IFAT) were examined. A total of 12% were positive serologically for Trypanosomiasis, but negative for piroplasmosis. Out of 380, 180 and 100 serum tested for B. equi, B. caballi and A. Phagocytophila 20%, 1% and 0% positive for B. equi, B. caballi and A. phagocytophila, respectively. As the vectors and reservoir hosts for these diseases are widely distributed in Malaysia, eradication of these diseases in not possible but risk and loss can be minimized by continuous monitoring.
