Abstract

A cross sectional study was conducted in and around Debre Birhan Ethiopia in two ranches and small holders, between October, 2008 and March, 2009 to estimate the sero prevalence of brucellosis in sheep and to identify the likely potential risk factors of brucellosis. The study involved collection of serum samples followed by serological testing using Modified Rose Bengal Plate Test (mRBPT) and Complement Fixation Test (CFT) and questionnaire surveys respectively. A total of 384 sheeps of either sex above six months of age with no history of previous vaccination against brucellosis were sampled, however during sample collection, information concerning age, sex, breed, herd size, history of abortion, still birth, the over all husbandry system and origin of animals were gathered. The mRBPT detected 7(1.8%) of the 384 samples as brucellosis positive, upon further retested using CFT, 5 (1.3%) out of 7 were confirmed to be positive. Outcome of the present study revealed that the prevalence of brucellosis based on serial (mRBPT and CFT) test in the study area was 1.3%. However, all positive sera were from ewes. Fisher's exact analysis showed that there was significant association between sero-poistivity to brucellosis and history of previous abortion (p< 0.05) respectively. In conclusion ovine brucellosis in the study area is low and a test and slaughter policy can be economically feasible in order to control brucellosis.
