Abstract

An outbreak of pneumonic pasteurellosis occurred in an organized farm of Murrah buffalo at Howrah district of West Bengal, India. Overall morbidity and mortality were 9.0% and 6.7%, respectively but the case fatality was 75.0%. Standard bacteriological study revealed the association of Pasteurella multocida cells with twitching motility. Scanning electron microscopy established the presence of long peritrichous fimbriae. Species and type specific PCR confirmed the identity of serotype B:2 P. multocida. This is probably the first report of fimbriated serogroup B P. multocida associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis in buffalo.
