Abstract Campylobacter has emerged as an important food borne pathogen of both human and animals and remain highly important zoonotic pathogen worldwide. Poultry and poultry products have repeatedly been implicated as a source of food borne infection for humans. In this study, two spp. viz. C. jejuni and C. coli, known to have significant public health significance, have been isolated and identified from chicken meat and carcasses. A total of 86 samples comprising of 35 samples of chicken meat and 51 of carcass swabs were collected from local poultry farms and retail shops of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and processed for detection and isolation of C. jejuni and C. coli. The result revealed that a total of 11 isolates viz. 10 isolates of C. jejuni and one of C. coli were recovered from the 86 samples processed. Of the 35 samples of chicken meat, 4 isolates of C. jejuni, and one of C. coli, and from carcasses samples, 6 isolates of C. jejuni were recovered. The overall prevalence for Campylobacter spp. in poultry meat and carcasses was found to be 12.79% in the present study. Top |
