Abstract

A total of 93 faecal samples/rectal swabs collected from 37 diarrhoeic yak calves and 56 non-diarrhoeic yaks, were examined for isolation and identification of different types of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Of these, 73 (78.49%) samples yielded 99 Escherichia coli strains including 40 strains from diarrhoeic yak calves and 59 from non-diarrhoeic yaks. Other aerobic bacteria isolated from these samples were Citrobacter spp. (12), Enterobacter spp. (11), Proteus spp. (7), Klebsiella spp. (6), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3) and Enterococci (5). None of the sample yielded Salmonella. Thirty six (38.71%) strains of Clostridium spp. including 16 strains from diarrhoeic yak calves and 20 from non-diarrhoeic yaks were also isolated from these samples, of which 25 (69.44%) strains were identified as Clostridium perfringens. The most predominant serogroup of E. coli were O101, O172, O60, O1, O5 and O12.
