ABSTRACT

Trace minerals zinc and iron were significantly (P<0.01) decreased from 30 days before parturition to the day of parturition in the ration of Mahsana buffaloes. Conversely, the level increased gradually thereafter up to 30 days after parturition. This indicates higher oxidative stress and lower anti-oxidant status during pregnancy as significantly (P<0.01) increased level of zinc and iron were observed in non-pregnant buffaloes than pregnant buffaloes on the day of parturition. Whereas, the level of copper increased (P<0.01) from 30 days before parturition to the day of parturition showing the highest level. In contrast, levels were decreased (P<0.01) from 15 days post partum to 30 days post partum. Further, lower (P<0.01) level of copper was found in non-pregnant buffaloes than in pregnant buffaloes on the day of parturition indicating role of copper in the process of parturition, which needs further study.
