Mutagenic Effectiveness and Efficiency of Gamma Rays in Isabgol (Plantago Ovata Forsk) Jain D.K., Ranwah B.R., Bordia P.C. Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur Abstract Seed of RI-89 isabgol variety were irradiated with nine doses of gamma rays viz., 15 kR, 30 kR, 60 kR, 75 kR, 90 kR, 105 kR, 120 kR and 135 kR to find out the frequency and spectrum of macro mutations and effectiveness and efficiency of above doses to induce desirable mutants. The frequency of morphological and chlorophyll mutations increased with increasing doses of gamma rays and recorded highest (1.92%) with 135 kR. Occurrence of chlorophyll mutants were rare than morphological mutants. Xantha type chlorophyll mutants and sterile spikes were produced at higher doses of radiation while other mutants were present at almost all the doses of radiation. Mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency was high at low to moderately high doses of gamma rays (15 kr to 90 kR), therefore it decreased. The 15 kR dose was most effective treatment while the efficiency measured on per cent seedling height reduction and reduction in pollen fertility basis was maximum at 75 kR and 45 kR, respectively. It was also maximum at 75 kR both on per cent reduction in seedling height and pollen fertility basis. Thus for obtaining highest efficiency in mutation breeding experiments, gamma rays doses ranging between 45 kR to 90 kR may be used in this crop. Top | |
