Studies on Genetic Divergence in Lentil (Lens Culinaris)

Abstract

Ninety-nine lentil genotypes of diverse origins were grouped into 10 clusters following Mahalanobis’ D2 analysis. Cluster VI with 22 genotypes was the biggest cluster, while cluster li was the smallest cluster with 2 genotypes. The clustering pattern indicated that the diversity was not related to geographical origins. The genotypes of clusters IX possessed minimum number of days to flowering and maturity, whereas the genotypes of cluster IV had maximum values for these traits. The genotypes of cluster IX possessed maximum number of fruiting branches, pods per plant and seeds per pod, whereas the maximum 100-seed weight was observed in the genotypes of cluster III followed by clusters VIM and VII. The mean seed yield per plot was maximum in cluster IX followed by clusters II and I, whereas the inter-cluster distance was maximum between clusters VI and X, followed by clusters I and IV and clusters VI and VII. The genotypes, ILL 1005 and ILL 7177 in cluster III and ILL9891 and ILL10009 in cluster VIII were found promising for high seed mass, whereas the genotypes LL699 and ILL7543 in cluster V and ILL9985 in cluster IX exhibited more number of pods and higher seed yield per plant. Thus, hybridization among these genotypes can generate desirable transgressive segregants.
