Abstract

House dust mites are an important source of allergens which can cause allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae associated with allergic respiratory disease in several areas of the world (Caraballo et al, 1993). The important allergenic role of this mite as an indoor has been described in this study. To investigate mites in the dust of air-conditioner filters in Jeddah governorate, a total of (210) dust samples were collected from four regions and forty houses. D. pteronyssinus was the most dominant species (80%). D. farina (15%) and Blomia tropicalis (5%) of total mites, respectively. In this investigations relative humidity varied between 75–86%, while in the houses that used a control sample varied between 65–71%. Multivariate regression analysis suggested that the annual average temperature and minimum temperature in different locations had dominant influences on mite air conditioner filter density. The logistic regression analysis revealed that the presence of air conditioner filter was positively associated with air conditioner age, utilization time and power (Wu et al, 2009). Wall and window type, air-conditioner had higher risk of central air conditioner finding air conditioner filter than the regular type air conditioner. It was also suggested that house type could influence the presence of mites air- conditioner filter. In this study, we find that the house mite D. pteronyssinus is the predominant species of mites in the dust of air-conditioner filters. The abundance and distribution of mites air-conditioner filter are also found significantly varied in different city regions in Jeddah. When we try to assess the possible risk of mites air- conditioner filter, more attentions should be focused on coastal region than dry region, because of the presence of high humidity. The influence analysis of environmental characteristic on the prevalence of mites air- conditioner filter will shed light on the establishment of mite control strategy and the design of mite defense air-conditioner (Wu et al, 2009). The results support the concept that reduced ventilation in homes involves a risk of increased house dust mite exposure.
