Abstract Introduction Oxygen is a physiologic requirement for normal cellular function (energy production through aerobic metabolism), and is vital to sustaining human life. A failure to maintain adequate blood oxygen levels can results in the progressive deterioration of the patient, beginning with cell death, and if prolonged, organ failure and ultimately body system failure and death. Aim The study aims to explore the practices related to oxygen therapy among staff nurses with a view to prepare a protocol on oxygen therapy given by face mask or nasal prongs. Materials and Methods An exploratory approach with purposive sampling technique was used in the study. Staff nurses administering oxygen in the morning, evening and night shifts were selected as sample (n=60). Data was collected by using inter rater non participatory method. Conceptual model of the present study was based on three stage model described by Fitts & Posner (1967). Results 90% staff nurses were lower than the expected standards, age, professional qualification, area of work, professional experience and in-service education had no impact only the training institution had an impact on the practices of staff nurses. The deficit was found in the area of preparation of patient, environment and articles. Conclusion Practices related to administration of oxygen by staff nurses were lower than the expected standard and therefore they need improvement to reach upto the expected standards. Thus protocol for giving oxygen therapy via face mask and nasal prongs was prepared. Top Keywords Practices, oxygen therapy, staff nurses. Top |
