Lifestyle modification and glycemic control in diabetes mellitus type 2

Abstract

Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a global public health problem of epidemic proportions, and its incidence is on the rise. It is usually first treated by physical activity, decreasing carbohydrate intake & losing weight. This control is achieved if clients are advised about their lifestyle changes. Several research studies have shown significant efficacy of lifestyle modification on DM Type 2.

Aim

To assess the lifestyle modification effect on glycemic control among diabetes mellitus type 2 patients (DM Type 2).

Material & Methods

A descriptive study was conducted to assess the lifestyle modification effect on glycemic control among diabetes mellitus type 2 patients (DM Type 2) patients visiting endocrinology OPD, DMC & Hospital Ludhiana. A total of 100 DM type 2 patients visiting endocrinology OPD of DMCH, Ludhiana comprised the sample of the study and Simple random sampling technique was adopted to collect the data. interview method and self structured checklist was developed to assess lifestyle modifications.

Results

Findings revealed that patients who showed good lifestyle modification had mean FBS 163.93mg/dl and mean value increased to 174.44mg/dl in those subjects who shows average lifestyle modification. The patient's who showed good lifestyle modification had mean RBS, 197.15mg/dl followed by those who showed average lifestyle modification with mean RBS, 210mg/dl and subjects who belonged to below average lifestyle has mean of RBS 374mg/dl`.

Conclusion

It shows that as the subjects had good lifestyle modification they had more control on their sugar levels. Therefore good lifestyle modification among DM type 2 patients help in controlling sugar levels, hence reducing the number of complications among them.
