Cancer of the cervix has been the most important cancer in women in India over the past two decades. The burden of cervical cancer in India is enormous accounting for about 20 percent of all cancer related deaths in women and is the number one cause of death in middle aged Indian women.

Aim

The present study was an attempt to assess effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding cervical cancer among women in selected rural areas of district Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

Design

A quasi-experimental pretest and posttest control group design

Materials and Method

Purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 women of age 21–45 years. The structured questionnaire was used which had two parts demographic data and questionnaire to assess the knowledge of women regarding cervical cancer. A structured teaching programme was used to provide teaching to experimental group on cervical cancer.

Results

In both control and experimental groups, majority of women obtained below average pretest knowledge score. In control group, maximum women obtained below average posttest knowledge score where as in experimental group, majority of women obtained good posttest knowledge score. The difference between pretest & posttest knowledge score of control group was statistically non significant at p<0.05 level but in experimental group it was statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level.

Conclusion

The study concluded that structured teaching programme was significantly effective in raising the knowledge of women regarding cervical cancer.
