Effectiveness of relaxation techniqueson patients with hypertension

Abstract

Introduction

Chronic stress, anxiety levels and blood pressure for patients with hypertension can be reduced with help of Relaxation Techniques. So, a study was conducted at Cardiology OPD's and Cardiac Units of BEE EEN Hospital and Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Jammu with objectives to determine the effectiveness of relaxation techniques on anxiety, stress and physiological parameters of patients and to determine the relationship between anxiety level, stress Level and physiological Parameters in experimental group and association to variables of age, sex, education and duration of illness.

Aim of the study

To assess the effectiveness of relaxation techniques on patients with hyper tension.

Material and Methods

An experimental approach with no-equivalent control group design and purposive sampling was used. The tools used were structured interview schedule, anxiety evaluation questionnaire, stress reaction questionnaire, observation schedule and self report inventory. The content validity was established. The experimental group patients were taught relaxation techniques and pretest and post-test were conducted. Frequency and Percentage distribution was used to describe the sample characteristics. Findings were computed using ‘t’ test, Correlation Coefficient and Chi-square’.

Results

The findings showed relaxation techniques to be significantly effective in decreasing anxiety levels and stress levels of the patients with hypertension. Teaching relaxation techniques was effective in decreasing heart rates and respiratory rates of the patients with hypertension. The anxiety level was significantly correlated to stress, heart rate and respiratory rate and reduction in anxiety, stress and physiological parameters was independent of selected variables. Implications point towards holistic outlook in care of patient for future progress of the Nursing profession.
