Abstract

Background

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a debilitating, paroxysmal, electric current-like pain occurring along the somatosensory distribution of trigeminal nerve with female predilection. Also known as the “Suicidal Disease”, Trigeminal Neuralgia has a significant disease burden affecting the quality of life of the patients.

Aim

This study was undertaken the evaluate the impact of trigeminal neuralgia on the quality of life of the patients and its pain association both before and after the treatment with trigeminal neuralgia.

Methods

This study involved 56 patients diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, all of whom met the specified inclusion criteria. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups - The patients were divided into two groups: Group I, which received peripheral neurectomy followed by chemical cauterization of the proximal nerve stump within the foramina, and Group II, which had the same procedure but with the foramina sealed using sticky bone. Both groups underwent surgery under local anesthesia. Visual Analogue Scale was employed both before and after the surgical procedure, for comparative analysis of pain relief. Quality of Life was measured with the Short-Form 36.

Results

Trigeminal Neuralgia negatively affects the quality of life before the treatment. However, following the treatment with peripheral neurectomy, the quality of life was significantly improved.

Conclusion

Even considering the small sample and some limitations, the present data indicates that trigeminal neuralgia has a negative impact on patients’ quality of life. However, the use of stickybone at the site after peripheral neurectomy in treating trigeminal neuralgia is a novel treatment that has the potential to transform the way pain and quality of life are managed.
