Online published on 16 September, 2013. Abstract A field experiment was conducted to find out the yield potential of popular jute varieties of West Bengal under different planting techniques. All the characters showed significant differences across the varieties and planting techniques. S-19 showed highest seed productivity (487.50 kg/ha) under line sowing and clipped planting technique. The most promising planting technique to get maximum seed yield was the line sowing and clipped followed by line sowing and non-clipped, seedling transplanting and clipped, whereas least promising one was top cutting and transplantation in puddle soil. The experiment suggested the possibility of seed production in humid sub-tropics of Terai zone if suitable planting technique is followed in marginal upland situation with optimum management practices.
