Resistance to Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) in paddy varieties Ashamo M.O., Khanna S.C. 1Department of Biology, Federal University of Technology, P.M.B. 704, Akure, Nigeria. E-mail: <oashamo@yahoo.com>. 2Division of Entomology, I.A.R.I., New Delhi 110 012, India. Abstract Nine recently released paddy varieties and one originated in Taiwan were tested for resistance to the Sitotroga cerealella in storage. Variety T(N)-1 emerged least susceptible (adult emergence 29.7, susceptibility index 11.9 & weight loss 4.2%). Pusa 834 was found to be the most susceptible (adult emergence 66.3, susceptibility index 15.0 & weight loss 10.9%). Susceptibility index of Pusa Sugandh-2 (weight loss 12.5%) was not significantly different from other varieties. Seed hardness did not correlate with susceptibility although short-medium sized seeds tend to be less susceptible. There was a negative correlation between susceptibility and amylosc content. Developmental period was higher in female (28 days) than males (27.6 days). The longevity of female was 9.8 days as compared to male (8.9 days). Top Key words Oryza sativa, Sitotroga cerealella, Varietal susceptibility. Top | | | |
