Abstract The crux of this study is to illustrate the degree of implementation of lean practices by the manufacturing firms in Bangalore. This study is also carried out to identify the critical driving and resisting forces toward implementation of LMS and to provide guidelines for the successful implementation of LMS by manufacturers in Bangalore. The data analyzed in this study are collected from a structured questionnaire sent to 150 manufacturing firms in Bangalore. Out of 150 questionnaires, 125 productive responses were received from senior production executives and plant supervisors. The most key lean initiatives found to be adopted by the manufacturers for achieving lean excellence in their manufacturing operations were Kaizen (continuous improvement), Just-In-Time (JIT) delivery from suppliers, 5S principle, and six-sigma. More importantly, the results of this study indicated that investment costs, difficulty in understanding LMS, and work force resistance were the most significant barriers to the effective implementations of LMS.
