Abstract

The existence of underground armed groups and the counterinsurgency operations violates the basic entitlements as many times the masses becomes like a sandwich between the armed groups. Moreover, the occurrence of violence as well as the conflict in the society creates the unpeaceful situation in society and violates the basic entitlements which are termed as human rights. Therefore, the transformation of the situation is very much indispensable so that human rights can be enjoyed by all without any kinds of difficulties. The enjoyment of human rights is vital as it gives meanings to human life and their existence in the human world. Therefore, it is been said that human rights are those rights without which no person can live as human beings. The existence of human rights in the society is also pertinent because it contributes to achieving peace, particularly positive peace. But the existence of peace and prevalence of human rights is questionable in Assam as the frequent occurrence of conflict as well as violations of human rights has been noticed. In this backdrop, the study attempts to understand the relationship between human rights and peace and the status of human rights and peace in Assam with special reference to the Serfanguri, Kokrajhar.
