Abstract In this paper, we present morphometric parameters of the Cauvery basin, draining parts of Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery basin supports 9 stream orders and the number of streams in the lower order is high while higher order is low. The density and frequency analysis for each square kilometer of the basin illustrates that, northern and southeasterly region has high density of streams in the upland region (middle domain) while eastern region is low due to the distributaries that drain parallel to each other. The correlation matrix analysis shows positive correlation between 3rd ordered stream frequency with the 3rd order drainage density; 2nd order stream frequency with 2nd order drainage density; first order stream frequency with 1st order drainage density; constant of channel maintenance with the length of overland flow; stream frequency with 1st order stream frequency; drainage density with stream frequency points to the bedrock channel drainage that is lithologically and structurally controlled. Top Keywords Cauvery River, middle domain, morphometry, drainage density, drainage frequency, bifurcation ratio, tectonism. Top |
