Abstract This research paper explores that the economic status of the sample street vendors in Madurai city. The aim is to understand the economic conditions which existed among the sample population in the study area. The study concluded that a vast majority of the respondents had invested below Rs.1000 to start vending business in the city of Madurai and 36.6 per cent of the street vendors’ daily average cost of carrying out the business was between Rs.200 and Rs.400 among the sample street vendors in Madurai city.
