Abstract In the present day context, education has become an important agency of modernization, democratization and all round development of mankind. Social development can be achieved by formulating viable national strategies for the eradication of illiteracy and universalisation of elementary education. Education is empowerment, vital and pervasive force in all aspect of life. It molds all of us an individual and as a society. The contribution of basic learning skills and awareness has to be adequately appreciated in terms of human rights, peace, improved health, poverty eradication and protection of the environment(S K Pant 1998). Various programmes launched by GOI to remove the curse of illiteracy like TLC(Total Literacy Campaign), PLP(Post Literacy Programme) and CEP(Continuing Education Programme). In the present paper an attempt has been made to assess the awareness level of the beneficiaries towards continuing education programme with special reference to Nainital District of Uttarakhand State.
