Abstract

Language acquisition usually refers to first-language acquisition, which studies infants ’native language. This is distinguished from second-language acquisition, which deals with the additional languages. Philosophers in ancient societies were interested in how humans acquired the ability to understand and produce language. They seemed to regard language acquisition as a subset of man's ability to acquire knowledge and learn concepts. Well known Sanskrit grammarian and philosopher Bhartrihari and Panini explained systematic and scientific study of language acquisition. This paper provides an overview of the theory of language acquisition, stages of language acquisition, and aims and challenges of English Teaching in India.
