Abstract Northeast India is a miniature India in the sense that the area is occupied by different people belonging to different races, castes, religions, languages, customs etc. After subjugation of the hill tribes and annexation of their territories, the British made several adjustments in the northeastern area to govern the hill people according to their conveniences and stability of the tribal people. The liberal administration and local autonomies granted to these people by the British made them feel that they are quite different from India and had no concerns for the plains people of India. British authorities serving in the hill areas instigated these tribal people to have their own political status when they would depart India and such instigation rooted in the mind of the tribal people made them stubborn for their demand for independence. This paper analyses the changes made in the constitution by the government of India toreorganize northeast India in solvingthe complex problem of northeast India, a gift of the legacy of the British rule.
