Abstract Census town in India has witnessed a rapid growth in the 2011 census. The new census towns account almost 30% of the urban growth during this time (Pradhan, 2013). At present Purba (East) Medinipur district of West Bengal has 20 census towns of which 16 have gained town status in the last census year-2011. Kolaghat Census Town located along the bank of the river Rupnarayan is the oldest, largest as well as the most populous census town of the district.
