Abstract

Health is a vital component in the development of any region, as poor health may lead to capability deprivation causing substantial loss of financial and human resources and thus ultimately approaching poverty. The public expenditure on Health in India has experienced wide fluctuations over the entire planning period and followed wide inter-state variations. Thus a good degree of skewness is clearly evident in case of public expenditure on health in India which lags behind in health expenditure as percentage of GDP when juxtaposed with developed nations like U.S., U.K. and France etc. Infrastructural facilities in Health express wide fluctuations across States and U. Ts too and the share of private sector in total health expenditure is definitely larger than that of public. Moreover, Life expectancy is increasing, infant mortality rate is falling and the gap between birth rate & death rate has declined. On the other side total fertility rate is also falling. So, it can be stated that Government expenditure on health has been conducive to the cause of human development and enhanced the indicators of human development up to some extent but still, situation is not so alluring.
