Securing Employment and Incomes through Public Programs:A Case of MGNREGA in Ranga Reddy District, Telangana Prasad B Ph. D. Abstract The migration takes place from rural to urban areas when the workers do not get adequate employment days and subsistence income in rural areas. This mode of migration takes worst form when it happens because of indebtedness and un-free labour relations. In order to prevent distress migration, the government of India introduced Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)-2005. The major objective of the programme is to enhance livelihood security of household in rural areas of the country by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to households, whose adult member volunteers to do unskilled manual work. The main objective of the paper is to examine the impact of MGNREGA on resolving employment and income insecurity in rural areas. The present study is based on secondary as well as primary data. The primary data haveobtained from household level survey in rural area of the Ranga Reddy District in Telangana state. The study find out that MGNREGA programme has positive impact on rural employment days, income, wages, and bargaining power of rural labour.
