Abstract The emphasis of this study is to raise the performance of the solar collector panel with slight modification in a domestic solar hot water system. The conventional solar collector panel is filled with a gas mixture consisting of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the mole ratio of 1: 3: 1 and the experiments were conducted for wind assisted circulation system (WACS) in the months of May, August and November 2016. The performance of WACS with gas is compared with WACS without gas and the hourly average efficiency is found to be comparatively high for WACS filled with gas. It was inferred that the daily average system efficiency was enhanced by 8.36%, 8.75% and 8.17% WACS mode of operation with gas filled collector panel in the months of May, August and November 2016. Comparative study on WACS mode of operation with and without gas reveal that WACS with gas filled in the collector panel under normal atmospheric pressure (WACS-GAS) appears be a better alternative to replace the natural circulation system, since WACS-GAS does not require electricity for its operation and can be installed in remote areas with limited or no supply of electricity.
